In Guy Delisle’s travel guide, there is a poignant moment when the author suddenly realizes how much freedom he really has compared to his Chinese colleagues. After being led around Shenzhen’s most famous tourist attraction, the tacky amusement park known as “Window of the World,” he looks at his companion, peers out the bus window at gloomy Shenzhen, and realizes that while he could travel to any of those places on a mere whim, his Chinese friend can’t even cross the river
